Haiti ranks as the third poorest country in the world. This densely populated Caribbean nation of eight million people has an average per capita income of less than $2 per day. It suffers from the highest rate of HIV/AIDS in the Western Hemisphere. Over 60% of the people go to bed hungry every night; 70% are illiterate. Approximately one of every ten children die before their first birthday – one in five die before their fifth birthday – from diseases that cost mere pennies to treat. The January 12, 2010 catastrophic Haiti earthquake has created new and additional need for humanitarian assistance.

For the past five years, U.S. International Media has contributed to the Haitian American Partnership Program Inc. (HAPPI). HAPPI supports the Bill Rice Medical Clinic and School at Nouvelle Cité on the Haitian Island of La Gonâve. Students have to pay monthly tuition to attend the school. Very few school supplies are available, and teachers often are not paid.
